Today I bring you an episode that I had originally produced 3 years ago that may be another tool in the toolbox for healing. And it’s music as therapy.
Over the past 10 years there’s been some increased interest in using music therapy for Alzheimer’s patients, Parkinson’s patients, and even people on the autism spectrum. I looked into music as a therapeutic tool for people with chronic diseases and stress related disorders.
There are now music therapists who use music almost exclusively to help with autism, stress, I call that “music in therapy”. There is a YouTube video that discusses a therapist who uses music to help treat autistic children and young adults. That video can be found here.
The “go to” guy in this field is a neurologist by the name of Oliver Sacks. He has a short YouTube video that describes his philosophy about using music for L Simon’s patients.
There is a fascinating documentary called “Alive Inside” that shows people with chronic diseases responding to music. This documentary can be found on YouTube, ($1.99), Amazon , (Free with prime) and iTunes ($2.99). If you would prefer just to watch the shorter video clip of “Henry” from the movie, you can find that on YouTube.
As always, if you have any questions or comments about this podcast episode, feel free to reach me on my contact page, that is on my website, Healing Outside the Box.
